    No. 263 Prinsengracht

"How could people better honor the memory of
Anne Frank then by saving this house, which is forever connected to Amsterdam's darkest years of Occupation in terms of literature and history."

The Amsterdam Historical Society 'Amstelodamum' in a letter to the City of Amsterdam, 1956.

In 1954, the Secret Annex is in very poor condition and
the building at 263 Prinsengracht no longer belongs to Otto Frank. It has been bought up by the Berghaus Firm and they want to demolish it, along with some neighboring buildings, in order to build a new office building. In 1957, after ardent protests from people in the community, the Amsterdam City Council offers to provide Berghaus with a new location for their business. The pending demolitions are therefore averted.
