Margot Frank

Margot is three years older than Anne. She’s tidy, quiet, and gets good grades at school.

Miep Gies says of her: ‘I didn’t have any relationship with Margot. She was there, and that was all.’ Anne confirms this image. Describing Margot at the table, she writes: ‘Eats like a little mouse, doesn’t say a word.’ Anne and Margot have a few fights during their time in the Secret Annex. But sometimes they get on well, and talk about lots of things.

After the war, Margot wants to emigrate to what was then the Palestine Mandate, to become a maternity nurse. Like Anne, she keeps a diary during the war. But Margot’s diary was never found.

1929

Margot’s sister Anne is born.

1932

Margot starts school at the Ludwig Richter Schule.

1933

Margot Frank emigrates with her parents to the Netherlands.

January 4, 1934

Margot starts school in Amsterdam.

February 16, 1934

Anne comes to Amsterdam as a ‘birthday surprise’.

1941

Margot has to go to the Joods Lyceum (‘Jewish High School’).

July 5, 1942

Margot receives her call-up papers: she has to report for a ‘work camp’ in Germany.

July 6, 1942

Margot goes into hiding with her parents and sister at Prinsengracht 263.

August 4, 1944

The people in hiding are arrested and sent to the Westerbork transit camp (the Netherlands).

September 3, 1944

Margot and the other people in hiding are deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp (occupied Poland).

September 6, 1944

Arrival at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Margot survives the selection.

Late October 1944

Margot is deported with Anne to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp (Germany).

March 1945

Margot dies of typhus in Bergen-Belsen.
