Subtle symbolism

She was awarded this welcome, and a camera, for her entry to the 2009 Anne Frank photo competition. The jury consisted of twelve talented young photographers from the international Joop Swart Masterclass 2009. They chose Wayan’s submission in part for its subtle symbolism.

Wayan’s greatest wish ...

Wayan’s photo ties into the theme of ‘what is your greatest wish?’, as well as Anne Frank’s wish to become a ‘journalist and then a famous writer’. Wayan hopes to become a photojournalist and show the world what it’s like to live in poverty.

... comes true

Wayan’s wish is coming true! Radio Netherlands Worldwide has asked her to write two articles about her visit to the Netherlands. These articles will be published on the broadcaster’s website. If this works out from both sides, Wayan will start writing regularly about her life in Bali. She’ll also be taking photos to go with her stories.

The Indonesian editorial team at Radio Netherlands Worldwide has held a collection to buy a laptop for Wayan. She’ll also be paid for each of her stories published on the broadcaster’s website. It means that Wayan is already taking her first steps towards her career in journalism!
