Virtual Wing

In honour of the 50th anniversary in 2010, the ‘Virtual Wing’ was completed. Now all of the Anne Frank House’s online material can be accessed within one web portal: www.annefrank.org. Here visitors will find information about Anne Frank, the historical collection and the museum itself. People can also take a look at The Secret Annex Online and the Anne Frank Timeline, as well as keep in touch via the Anne Frank House’s pages on YouTube, Facebook, Flickr and Twitter.

The Secret Annex Online

The Anne Frank House wants to give people around the world the chance to see the place where Anne Frank and the other inhabitants of the Secret Annex went into hiding. This is now possible thanks to The Secret Annex Online. In this 3D computer environment, visitors can explore the front and back parts of the building at 263 Prinsengracht. This experience is also exceptional because The Secret Annex Online is furnished similar to how it looked during the hiding period. Thanks to excerpts from Anne Frank’s diary and eyewitness accounts, visitors can learn more about what actually took place there at that time.

Unique Images

In the online hiding place, visitors can see select objects and access more detailed information about these items. The furnished rooms are based on photos taken in 1999 when the front part of the building and the annex out back were temporarily furnished. Unique film-footage provided by the Dutch television station AVRO can be seen on The Secret Annex Online for the very first time. In filmed excerpts, the helpers look back on Word War II and relate how they assisted Anne Frank and the others in hiding.

I've just seen the Secret Annex Online and I’m extremely impressed. It actually feels like you’re in the building walking around. It's absolutely amazing!

Realisation

LBi Lost Boys and the Anne Frank House were jointly responsible for the concept, strategy and realisation of the ‘Virtual Wing’, including The Secret Annex Online. The BankGiro Lottery; VSB Fund; Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports (VWS); the Mondriaan Foundation and the Anne Frank-Fonds in Basel made this project possible financially.

Prizes

On 12 June, the anniversary of Anne Frank’s birthday, The Secret Annex Online was chosen ‘Site of the Day’ on FWA.com (Favourite Website Awards). The Secret Annex Online also received an Adobe Max Award, an international prize for innovative digital applications. The winners were officially announced on 26 October at a ceremony in Los Angeles.
