Joop Zoutberg - ‘No one thought that they would come back’
‘During the last months of the war people began to realize what had happened to the Jews. No one thought that they would come back. But one day the doorbell rang and an old friend of my father, Moos, stumbled up the stairs. “Hey, Dirk,” he shouted to my father. “I survived mate!” Moos had been in several camps and had had to work down mines. He walked so badly because he’d lost his toes due to frostbite. He told us all about the terrible things that happened to the Jews in the camps.
