Monument for Keesje Brijde
On 13 December 1944, 12 year old Keesje Brijde is shot. It’s the middle of the winter of starvation and Keesje goes looking for coal for his mother. He goes to the Rietlanden area of the oostelijke havengebied (east harbour area) which is out of bounds.
Keesje is caught by either an NSB member or the Grüne Polizei and shot. He is taken to the Onze Lieve Vrouw hospital, but dies of his injuries. He is buried in the Oosterbegraafplaats cemetery.
After the war a white cross is erected on the Borneokade in memory of Keesje, the place where he was probably shot.
