The Princess Irene Brigade parades triumphantly
The Princess Irene Brigade comprises of Dutch troops who managed to escape to England in 1940 and others Dutch men who managed to escape later during the war. The Brigade (named after Queen Wilhelmina’s second granddaughter, Princess Irene) was involved in the liberation of Eindhoven (18 September 1944), Tilburg (25 October 1944) and The Hague (8 May 1945).
The Dam
Square in the middle of Amsterdam and the historical heart of the city. On 7 May 1945, shortly after the liberation, a bloodbath takes place here when German soldiers open fire on the crowd which is celebrating.
