A festive gathering of the Dutch Diamond Workers’ Union
The Dutch Diamond Workers’ Union is committed to the welfare of workers in the diamond industry. They work long hours for low wages. All sorts of people are members of the union: Jews, Christians, as well as better and less well-educated people.
The union’s headquarters are in the ‘Burcht van Berlage’ on the Franschelaan. The Franschelaan is now known as the Henri Polaklaan. It was named after him because he was the driving force behind the union. Polak initiated the establishment of the Dutch Trade Union Confederation, the forerunner of today’s FNV (workers union).
