At home with Van Pels
There are not many photos of the Van Pels family. This photo shows Auguste (left) and Hermann van Pels (right) with Otto and Alice Loeb in between them. The photo was taken in Osnabrück, Germany in 1929.
In May 1938, Hermann, Auguste and their son Peter move into the Biesboschstraat. They live with Auguste’s parents and another family. It has been almost a year since they left Osnabrück and went to live in the Stadionweg.
Forced to leave
Hermann van Pels’ family are in the butchery business. Because of the boycott of Jewish shops in Germany his father is forced to sell the family business and there is no work for Hermann. In the Netherlands he and Otto Frank work together establishing the new business Pectacon which is to sell herbs and spices to butchers.
Hiding with the Franks
Hermann, Auguste and their son Peter go into hiding with the Frank family in the secret annex in July 1942. They arrive a week after the Franks. Anne likes them coming because she has more people to talk to.

Refugees and immigrants
After Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany in 1933, tens of thousands of Jews decide to leave their fatherland and to chance their luck elsewhere. A large number move to neighboring country the Netherlands. In 1941 the number of German Jewish refugees in the Netherlands totals 15,174.
Political and Jewish refugees are accepted, but the Dutch government also sends many back. The Jewish community is responsible for looking after the refugees.
