Seyss- Inquart gives a speech in the Concertgebouw
Seyss- Inquart, Reichs Commissaris for the German occupied Netherlands gives a speech in the Concertgebouw. The speech is published in a pamphlet.
“And I would like to take this opportunity to say something about the Jewish question. We do not consider the Jews to be members of the Dutch nation. The Jews for us are not Dutch. They are an enemy with whom we cannot have a cease fire nor make peace. Do not expect me to set this down as a regulation except in police measures. We will hit the Jews where we can. And those who help them will be hit just as hard.”
Persecution of the Jews
Shortly after Hitler comes to power in Germany, the persecution of the Jews starts. The aim is to get rid of all Jews in Germany. The Nazis isolate Jews from non-Jews. Molestation and vandalism become the order of the day. The Nazis continue these practices in the occupied countries. Sometimes Jews become forced labourers but most are systematically murdered. The majority of the Jews in the Netherlands are deported to concentration camps where they are killed in gas chambers. The murder of European Jews – in total circa 6 million – is known as the Holocaust or the Shoah.
