The monument to Herman Heijermans in the Leidsche Bosje is torn down
The pedestal of the monument to Herman Heijermans in the Leidsche Bosje. The statue was unveiled in 1929 and had been mauled several times. In 1935 it is so badly mauled that a new one is commissioned from sculptor Mendes de Costa. But this one is not safe either; it is daubed with red paint and paper swastikas are strewn round it. On 7 November 1940 the statue loses its nose.
To prevent further damage the monument is stored away. In 1964 it is unveiled again in the Leidsche Bosje.
Anti-Semitism
There is not a lot of anti-Semitism in Amsterdam, but it does exist. There are several fascist groups who turn on Jews either with violence or with propaganda. The NSB is also suspected of having anti-Semitic sympathies but its leader, Mussert, disassociates himself from this. From the beginning of the occupation Jewish shops, cafés and monuments in Amsterdam are regularly attacked. The Jewish community tends to ignore this at first. In 1941 there is a big fight when members of the WA go into the Jewish neighbourhood and are met by Jewish gangs.
