Heinrich Himmler on the Museumplein
On 18 May 1942 Heinrich Himmler speaks to the newly formed Amsterdam Police Battalion on the Museumplein. According to Police Commissioner Tulp, the speech is unexpected and Himmler is friendly and appreciative. Himmler says; ‘The modern policeman should be a friend of the public and not a bogeyman.’
As leader of the SS Himmler is one of the driving forces behind the persecution of the Jews. German sympathizer and NSB member Police Commission Tulp is helpful in facilitating the deportation of Jews from Amsterdam.
