Joop Zoutberg - Like rats in a trap
‘Everyone was registered and received identity papers. Then they stopped people on the streets or raided a theatre and took all the Jewish men. It was said that they were going to work in camps. These arrests caused fear and unrest in the neighborhood. It was the start of the terror.
In the Jewish neighborhood everyone lived on a sort of small island surrounded by water, they only had to open the bridges and everyone was trapped, like rats in a trap. Then it wasn’t only the young men that they took, everyone was taken, women, children, old people and even the sick. They were taken to the Hollandsche Schouwburg (Dutch Theatre) on the Plantage Middenlaan and from there sent away. Where to? I didn’t know. But it wasn’t very nice, which was quite clear.’
