Anne Frank - The radio as ‘morale booster’
In July 1943 people living in the centre of Amsterdam have to hand in their radios. The Nazis don’t want people listening to the BBC and other radio stations. Victor Kugler hands in the large radio that stood in the private office. From then on the people in hiding listen to a small radio that they are given by Johannes Kleiman in the van Pels’ room.
For Anne and the other people in hiding the radio is really a ‘morale booster’: 'It’s true: as the reports from outside grow worse and worse, the radio, with its wonderous voice, helps us not to loose heart and to keep telling ourselves, “Cheer up, keep your spirits high, things are bound to get better!” - Anne Frank, 15 June 1943
Prinsengracht 263
On 1 December 1940, Otto Frank moves his business from the Singel to a larger building on the Prinsengracht at number 263 near the Westerkerk (church). From 6 July 1942 to 4 August 1944 the Frank family and four others hide in the secret annex behind this building.
