Hidden Jewish library discovered in the Grote Synagogue
The Library which is bricked in behind a wall is discovered and its contents are confiscated.
The 'Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg' (ERR) has been set up by higher ranking Nazis in order to confiscate European works of art, items of cultural and religious heritage, archives and libraries. Much is successfully hidden from the ERR but this organization still manages to ‘obtain’ large collections.
Non-Jewish institutions are also affected. The Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis (International Institute for Social History) library comprising of 160,000 items is confiscated in July 1940.
The dispossession of the Jews
The Nazi occupier weakens the position of the Jews by taking away their work, money and possessions. Early on Jews are no longer able to own their own businesses, work for non-Jews or have bank accounts. After the deportations their houses are emptied of their possessions.
