Second attack on the Weteringschans detention centre
Hilbert van Dijk and Johnnes Post organise a second attack on the Weteringschans Detention Centre. There are still a large number of resistance members there after the failed attempt in May and the resistance want to try to rescue them.
Twelve men storm the building, but the attempt fails. Shooting starts between the Resistance men and the SD, a number manage to escape, but 5 are arrested.
Johannes Post is also arrested after a violent chase by the SD but Hilbert van Dijk manages to get away. He is hit by two bullets during the chase and is bleeding heavily. He hides in a pigeon loft but the owners discover him and call the police, van Dijk is picked up.
The resistance members are taken to the Euterpestraat and from here taken to dunes near Overveen and executed.
The photograph was commissioned by the resistance for an earlier rescue plan.
Resistance
People against the Nazis commit acts of resistance. These people are mostly organized into small groups which are often part of a larger organization. Acts of resistance include; helping people in hiding, stealing and forging ration coupons and identity papers, attacks on public records offices and distribution offices, sabotage, assassinating German military personnel and collaborators; printing and distributing illegal newspapers.
