Tieke Jansma on the roof of her house in the Nieuwe Prinsengracht with a ‘hidden’ lady
Tieke Jansma has people in hiding in her house in the Nieuwe Prinsengracht. She did this in her house in Zaandijk, where she was teacher, too. In her Amsterdam home there are eight people in hiding: Karel Fonteijn (who was also in hiding with her in Zaandijk), Selma Wackers-Schwarz, Doris and Erna Berliner, Davina Margot van Rijn, Norbert Klein, Esther Helena Knap and Heinz Martin Silbermann.
In November 1944 Tieke manages to get hold of some eel, but unfortunately Doris, Erna, Norbert and Selma become seriously ill after contracting salmonella from them. They are taken to a hospital in the Karel du Jardinstraat.
Tieke Jansma also dies from typhus in this hospital on 12 January 1945. After her death her house remains a hiding place and two more people join those in hiding there. Everyone is able to stay in the house until the liberation.
