To other camps

By the autumn of 1944, Germany had been pushed into a corner. The American, Canadian, and British troops were approaching the German border from the west, and in the east, the Soviet army was only 100 kilometres from Auschwitz. Tens of thousands of prisoners were then transferred to Germany to work in the war industry. Fritz Pfeffer was taken to the Neuengamme concentration camp, where he died. Anne and Margot Frank and Auguste van Pels were transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. There, Anne and Margot fell ill and became so weakened that they died. After some time, Auguste was transferred to a labour camp and later died en route to yet another camp. Edith was left behind in Auschwitz and died there in January 1945.
