The day after they had won the municipal elections, the Nazis raised a swastika flag on top of the Frankfurt am Main city hall. Two days earlier, Nazi leader Jakob Sprenger had given a fierce antisemitic speech: βIt is an outrage that Jews and friends of Jews are still in power at Frankfurt City Hall. Take my word for it, tomorrow, Frankfurt will obey the voice of the German leader. Tomorrow, this Frankfurt vermin will be burned away like bugs, smoked out like rats with the plague that don't want to get off the ship. Tomorrow, Frankfurt is going to be German, from tomorrow, it is going to be a pillar of the National Socialist Third Reich.'
In Frankfurt, the NSDAP comes to power
March 13, 1933 Frankfurt
Jakob Sprenger was the βGauleiterβ (regional party leader of the NSDAP) of the province of Hesse-Nassau. The NSDAP gained the majority in the Frankfurt city council and appointed the new mayor: Nazi Friedrich Krebs. Jewish mayor Ludwig Landmann was pressured by the Nazis to resign and did so on 11 March; afterwards, he fled to Berlin because the SA wanted to arrest him.
